Human Trafficking

Human trafficking involves recruiting, grooming and sexually exploiting victims who are mostly women and children. Many human traffickers control their victims by taking away their identification, use violence or threats and isolate them from their friends and family. Often, human trafficking victims feel trapped with no way out because they fear they or their family members will be killed if they try to escape.

When being groomed, a human trafficker may lure victims with the promise of love and security. By the time they are sexually exploited, many victims have developed an unbreakable bond with the human trafficker.

The Criminal Code of Canada contains charges with hefty sentences if convicted to bring human traffickers to justice. A perpetrator may face human trafficking, withholding or destroying documents, kidnapping, forcible confinement, uttering threats, extortion, assault, sexual assault and criminal organization charges.
