Homicides in Canada

Homicides in Canada account for a small proportion of all police-reported violent offences but their lasting impact on families and communities can be devastating.

Homicide survivors – family members and friends left behind – are also victims of crime. They are left to pick up the pieces after their lives have been shattered.

There were 604 homicides in Canada in 2015, which is an increase of 83 from the year before.

Aboriginal people accounted for one-quarter of the homicide victims in 2015. Aboriginal men were more frequently victims of homicide, and the rate of homicide for women was six times higher than non-Aboriginal women.
