VJN Victims and Survivors of Crime Week 2019 Global Classroom

On May 31st, 2019 the Victim Justice Network in partnership with Durham College delivered a Global Classroom online event on the topic of “Resilience and Victims of Violence”. This interactive event provides an overview of key research findings from a multi-year research project that was led by Dr. Ben Roebuck at Algonquin College in Ottawa, Ontario. The discussion addresses the topic of resilience from a victim perspective, based on interviews and surveys of over 400 victims across Canada. The recorded event is accessible via the links on this website.

Victimization of Candians Abroad

Canadians travelling in a foreign jurisdiction can become victims of crime.  Victimized Canadians may not know how/where to report and may come home looking for support.  Where one can go to get help in a foreign jurisdiction, how one can afford to travel back and forth to attend the trial, and where one can go for support in Canada after being victimized abroad, are all points to consider when attempting to understand the needs of victims of crime abroad.

Sexual Offences

Sexual offences involve a large range of offences and thus the nature of these crimes means that victims may experience physical, emotional, psychological, and sexual impacts unique among crime victims.

Internet and Online Offences

Cyberbullying involves the use of communication technologies such as the Internet, social networking sites, websites, email, text messaging and instant messaging to repeatedly intimidate or harass others.

Sextortion involves individuals who coerce youth into sending sexual images or engaging in sexual acts via webcam and then blackmail them with the threat of distributing the sexual images/videos if they do not pay money or provide more sexual images/videos.

Human Trafficking

Human trafficking involves recruiting, grooming and sexually exploiting victims who are mostly women and children. Many human traffickers control their victims by taking away their identification, use violence or threats and isolate them from their friends and family.
